'DIESIS deals with distributed signal processing for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Over the last years, many WSN-based applications have emerged, leading to an urgent need for network-centric solutions at the physical layer. The proposed project aims to a framework of distributed estimation, detection, and tracking methods for WSNs. This will be achieved through the development of innovative decentralized signal processing algorithms, the analysis of their performance, the derivation of adaptive alternatives for non-stationary signals, and the study of the performance degradation caused by non-ideal operating conditions. Moreover, the application of the new algorithms in a network of sensors measuring physical, chemical, and biological variables of water resources will be investigated. The proposed fellowship is closely related to the Work Programme. The applicant has been working on adaptive signal processing, while he has gained professional experience by participating in several R&D projects. His achievements indicate values such as initiative, mobility, and management skills, which are critical for this fellowship. By working on distributed signal processing and environmental engineering applications, the researcher will diversify his research interests in a promising direction. Also, by being exposed to a training experience at the United States, he will reinforce his academic achievements and obtain complementary skills for an independent career. Concerning the two hosts, the partner institution is one of the most distinguished universities at the US. The outgoing phase hosting lab and the supervisor have a pioneering contribution in the proposed research field and remarkable track records in mentoring experienced researchers. The return host partner has a long experience in the area of signal processing, participates in European research networks, and possesses the motivation and the infrastructures to absorb the experience gained by the fellow.'
