 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'This research addresses a vital issue facing all organizations; how to remain economically viable while becoming environmentally sustainable. In addition, the research leverages a data base of investments and practices from for-profit entities located all over the globe. Data from multiple countries and regions is vital because the manner in which organizations from different parts of the globe address environmental issues tends to vary, with organizations located in the EU adopting different strategies and practices than those located elsewhere. What is not known is if this variance also relates to the efficacy of investment and practices. Without a global sample it is then impossible to determine if an investment and or practice is universally linked to reduced environmental impacts, or if the efficacy of an investment and or practice is linked to the setting in which it is adopted. This project will help to make this delineation clear. A Fellowship for Dr. Pagell will make it possible to do this research. Dr. Pagell is an expert on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), in a North American context. The fellowship would bring Dr. Pagell and his knowledge to University College Dublin (UCD). There his skills and knowledge would be combined with the skills and knowledge of the UCD community as well as EU organizations engaged in SSCM. The project team will then combine global expertise and a unique data set to address this pressing issue. The project will use a data-base with detailed information on the actual environmental investments and supply chain management practices of 1125 firms located in 17 countries to explore the role of institutions such as country, industry, and the adoption of voluntary standards such as ISO 14,000 in the efficacy of investments made to reduce the environmental impact of a supply chain. The project then leverages a unique data set and rare skills to address a question of immediate importance.'

Introduzione (Teaser)

EU-funded research has succeeded in showing that the adoption of environmental management systems leads to meaningful environmental investments. Project outcomes also showed that, for certain industries, this approach can also boost operational performance.
