 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'Dr Olwen Grace has worked at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the United Kingdom since 2004. She was recognised as a promising young scientist in South Africa where she began her research career in botany, and completed a part-time PhD in Plant Science at the University of Pretoria in 2009. This proposal, ALOE-DIVERSITY, is for a 24-month intra-European career development fellowship at the Pharmacognosy Laboratory in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, University of Copenhagen in Denmark (host institution). Dr Grace will draw on a range of state-of-the-art molecular, biological, chemical and analytical techniques to produce the first robust phylogeny of Aloe (Asphodelaceae) including 200 taxa representing over a third of the diversity in this speciose genus, and novel chemical and bioactivity data for at least 50 Aloe species representing the phylogenetic diversity of the genus. The interdisciplinary nature of ALOE-DIVERSITY will significantly extend the evaluation of the ethno-guided and phylogenetic approaches to medicinal plant research. Aloe is a particularly appropriate candidate for this study due to the exceptional diversity, ethnobotanical and economic value of species such as Aloe vera L., as well as their medicinal properties and the growing concerns for their conservation. Through ALOE-DIVERSITY, Dr Grace will add new insights into predictive approaches to plant drug discovery and the identification of measures necessary to ensure the sustainable use of Aloe in future.'
