Summary

Maps are a basic infrastructure that reduce time for wayfinding at large buildings such as hospitals and universities. They are also an important part of finding assets in asset tracking that is an important part of IoT.

Only a limited large and complex buildings have easily accessible indoor maps, and the reason is cost. The larger and more complex a building is, the higher the cost to make and maintain indoor maps gets. The cost is high because of the manual labor related to making maps. Typically, digital indoor maps are hand drawn. New methods for making and maintaining indoor maps are required.

The feasibility study was divided into five tasks, of which three related to scaling the delivery capability of MazeMap and two were related to scaling sales through leveraging current partners and identify new partners. A summary of the five tasks follows below.

1) Identify bottlenecks of scaling map delivery Map generation is automated, but delivery is not and requires customer interaction for quality assurance. Identify bottlenecks in map delivery that must be made more efficient to deliver to 100 times more customers.

2) Analyse bottlenecks Measure the impact of removing bottlenecks by analysing which delivery tasks that are spent most time on for a standard delivery of 100 000 m2 of maps.

3) Plan Investigate solutions for how to remove bottlenecks and use result of analysis to calculate return on investment. Prioritize solutions and make development plan.

4) Leverage existing partner relationships.

5) Partner search and engagement.

Work performed

The feasibility study has resulted in a SME Instrument phase 2 application that builds on the findings in this study.

The delivery process has been analyzed and bottlenecks have been identified. Tasks have been specified that will reduce or remove these, and they have been prioritized according to the value they have for MazeMap and their complexity. We estimate that we can reduce the delivery time with around 70% if this project is completed.

MazeMap have strengthened the relationship with existing partners through product integrations and found new partners within the IoT industry and companies doing physical signage. There is a huge potential to increase the cooperation we already have with existing partners and the results from the activities carried out in this project also shows that there is potential for scaling through new partners as well.

During the feasibility study, we found that we should not only keep track on the number of hours we use on delivering maps for customers, but also the time required to complete customers. Typically, we use long time, not because we use so many hours, but there are dependencies on the customer. The QA process often takes long time, because it is dependent on the customer, which might not have time or does not give QA of the maps high priority.

Final results

Automating the generation of digital indoor maps result in extensively reduced costs and has the potential to transform the map market for large and complex buildings, so that indoor maps get as common as outdoor maps.
