 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'The aim of the project 'OdourCOB – Odour Characterisation of Odorants from Biosolids' is to identify the major contributing odorants produced from wastewater biosolids to odour annoyance. In order to achieve this goal a range of different unit processes used for the treatment of wastewater biosolids will be characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/olfactory analysis (GC-MS/O) to determine the olfactory impact of odours in terms of their odour character and intensity. The functionality between the unit processes and the odorants will be investigated by applying statistical algorithms, chemometric methods and multiway data analysis techniques to discriminate and identify the major contributing odorants. The GC-MS/O analytical approach will be used for separation, isolation and identification of compounds from biosolids treatment facilities. The combine analytical and data analysis techniques will enable the establishment of specific odour fingerprints for the different unit processes as well as variations due to sludge variability and operating conditions. The three-year project on wastewater biosolid odour characterization will be executed at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia (outgoing host) and Warsaw University of Technology, Poland (return host). Both of research institutions offer the research fellow, the research infrastructure in terms of state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and supporting professional mentoring to undertake the proposed studies and further develop his scientific capacity to understand the composition of odorous emissions from biosolid treatment processing. The outcomes from the research will minimise the environmental impact of such waste management operations on local populations as well as enable the benchmarking the monitoring techniques and methodologies for the assessment of odorous emissions from these facilities to improve the design of the odour abatement systems and management strategies.'
