 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'The first aim of my project is to study the development of a new kind of readers in Europe in the Early Modern period, those who were interested in works of humanities (understood as the erudition and fine writing), and the influence of cultural transferences on it. Until this moment, these humanities works have been studied from the perspective of its lenguage, its authors or its bibliographical characteristics, but the questions proposed in this project are different. An interdisciplinary perspective is compulsory, a perspective in which economic, social and cultural history are combined; because the objetive is not only to identify those who were their readers, but also to know how they assimilated and responsed to these texts. These readers seem to have been members of the urban oligarchy. The starting point for this project will be the Seville readers living during the Spanish Golden-Age (XVIth-XVIIth centuries), this study should be done overcoming the local view with a global perspective of analysis. In that sense, the close cultural relation between Spain and Italy in the Early Modern period, leads us to study the role that the emulation of Italy played in the formation of “cultured” Spanish readers. This offers us the possibility to evaluate the role played by the cultural exchange with Italy in the appearance and development of this type of readings, as well as compare Spanish and Italian libraries. This research will allow us to evaluate the degree in which the Spanish colony in Italy served as a bridge or road for the transmission of works of humanities to the Iberian Peninsula, and from there to the Americas. Therefore, the main objetive of my project is to study the cultural tranference in Europe (and the Americas) through the mechanisms of the circulation of books and texts. Those mechanims can be professional (booksellers) or non-professional (I will pay speciall attention, for example, to the correspondence between erudites).'
