High infrastructural spending (expected to reach €79 trillion annully on a global scale) is highly indicative of the ageing of our infrastructure (with most assets being >60years old). As infrastructure ages, its level of service, reliability and safety decreases, becoming susceptible to failure and a danger to human life. The most plausible solution to this problem is the adoption of proper asset management. A fundamental premise to asset management is continuous monitoring to understand the state of the infrastructure for appropriate action to be taken and this has been made possible through the use of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, current tools for asset monitoring either have low accuracy, are manually operated, lack civil engineering expertise, are not scalable - service specific e.g. big infrastructure only, or are extremely expensive. This limits the determination of present asset conditions and hinders effective preventive maintenance operations to make ageing infrastructure safer. Realising this challenge, INFRASENS is developing Inte-Sens, a game changing integrated sensor system with a range of application-specific sensors and a wireless data transmission system, used to monitor and manage infrastructure in real time. Our key unique feature which enables our uniqueness is the ability for Inte-Sense to link all geotechnical sensors under a single data management and the combination of our sensor technology with Big Data analytics to create an exact representation of the state of the asset. This enables civil engineers to forecast asset conditions and/or failure and make informed maintenance decisions on behalf of their customers. Although it has a miriad of application, for the purpose of this project, Inte-Sens will be targeted at residential infrastructure. This feasibility study will enable us to validate the viability of Inte-Sens and ascertain the technical, commercial and financial conditions for successful completion and exploitation.
