Nowadays, a major multibillion dollars battle about sports TV rights is going on between new digital players and traditional broadcasters. Sports TV rights on sports broadcasting images have never been so expensive. Increasing each year they reached more than € 40Bn in 2016. Stakeholders are looking urgently for new alternatives solutions to maintain attractiveness in an ocean of contents. Mac-Lloyd has designed SPIKE a new extended reality (XR) broadcasting solution, alternative to TV images for indoor sports, based on a precise and powerful tracking system. It is a significant new business opportunity for innovative virtualised sport contents associated to “live” or “on demand” immersive user experience. Mac Lloyd comes from outdoor sports and events tracking systems. Indoor sports synthetic images are the natural next market. From a technological perspective it is challenging area. SPIKE requires real time tracking data for indoor sports. The interest of potential clients is big. Several discussions are on-going with international organizations, such as European sports teams, USA NBA and event organizers. Sports media is a growing worldwide market (€40Bn, 5%/year), and indoor sports is taking a large part of it. Major leagues like NBA gathers 13% of North America media rights and 6% of worldwide rights. SPIKE SME Instrument project will allow the company to develop and industrialize its advanced XR solution, necessary for a global commercialisation. Mac-Lloyd will first complete a feasibility study to further analyze risks and costs, targeted markets regulatory frameworks and will conduct in-depth analysis of the global indoor sports XR broadcasting market. Mac-Lloyd plans to make deals with some of the 50 most valuable sport events worldwide (NBA playoffs, summer Olympic games, North American Hockey..) to become a European and worldwide champion of live indoor sports XR market with a planned turnover of €50 million by 2024 and the creation of 80 new jobs.
